Cooking Through "The Baker's Man": Mickey Mouse Club

My birthday is just around the corner! Birthday cakes are personal and normally bought or baked with a special someone’s likes in mind. They are sometimes brought to a table with candles blazing like a fire (this happens as you grow older). Sometimes they have sparking candles that you can’t blow out, and the crowd thinks it’s funny, but you keep trying to extinguish the flames anyway.

I’ve had all sorts of birthday cakes through the years. My favorites are usually chocolate, but I wouldn’t turn down a birthday cake, especially if someone made it just for me.

I’ve had a birthday cake delivered to me through the mail by my parents one year because we couldn’t be together on my birthday. It arrived on my doorstep a few days early, and I wasn’t allowed to eat it until the special day. So every time I opened the fridge, I eyed it.

Because I love Mystic Water, and Anna is one of the best bakers I know, she decided to make me a comical birthday cake this year. Anyone who knows me knows that I have an affection for Mickey Mouse and Disney World (I’m pretty sure I could live there.). So this year, she made me a Mickey Mouse Club. Note: No Mickeys were harmed in the making of this cake.

Mickey Mouse Club

Serves: 8

Level of Difficulty: Difficult unless you’re a pro with fondant

Ingredients

1 white cake mix (home made or box)

2 c heavy cream (or tub of icing)

1 box of white fondant

assorted gel coloring

How to Make

  1. Make the cake according to the directions in 3 small square pans. My baking dish is a 4 x 4. Allow cakes time to cool, at least half an hour.

  2. While cakes are cooking and cooling, make assorted Mickey Mouse parts. You may want toothpicks to help support his arms and legs. Allow fondant to dry for a few hours until it hardens.

  3. Remove the cakes from the pans, and place on a cooling rack. You might need to slice off the top of the cakes if they are rounded on the top.

  4. Beat 2 cups of heavy cream in a stand mixer on high until whipped cream happens. Slather this between the cake layers (or use icing if you’d prefer.

  5. Layer the Mickey Mouse parts between one layer and add other sandwich additions to the other layer.

  6. Eat and enjoy!
